Are you putting off filling in the registration form because the idea of attending a presentation skills course is as scary as delivering a presentation? If so, here’s an exercise that you may find useful:
Get yourself a piece of paper and divide it into two columns. In the left hand side column write a heading “What’s holding me back from doing this course” and in the right hand column write a heading “Why I should do the course”. Then write down as many points as you can think of on both sides. Your piece of paper may look something like this:
Look at the items on the left-hand side. If they were to happen (and this is unlikely given how carefully we structure the course), how terrible would it really be. Put a number between 1 and 10 where 10 is absolutely catastrophic and 1 is vaguely uncomfortable. Now look at what you’ve expressed on the right hand side. How important are they to you? How important is it to you to be able to speak up in work meetings? How important is your career to you. How important is it for you to be able to speak at your daughter’s 21st or your son’s christening. Again put a number against each item where 10 is it will make a major impact on my life and how I feel and 1 is “it would be good but I really don’t mind that much it it never happens”. Now add up the numbers on both sides. Do the things you’d like to be able to do outweigh the fears in importance? If they do, you should come on the course.
